Carbon Fibre Care Guide for a Sharp Finish

A carbon front lip that sits low, a gloss spoiler catching the light, or a diffuser filling out the rear end can completely change how your car presents. But carbon only looks premium when the finish stays deep, clean and damage-free. This carbon fibre care guide is built for enthusiasts who want their upgrade to keep turning heads long after installation.

The rule is simple: treat carbon fibre like a painted exterior panel, while giving extra attention to the areas where aftermarket aero parts cop the most abuse. Road grime, harsh Australian UV, brake dust, bugs and loose stones do not care how expensive your build is.

Know What You’re Cleaning First

Not every part with a carbon weave is the same. Genuine carbon fibre components use woven carbon cloth set in resin, usually finished with a clear coat. Carbon-look parts, meanwhile, may be ABS, polyurethane or fibreglass with a printed, dipped or laminated weave effect. They can still look tough, but their cleaning and repair options are different.

For most gloss carbon fibre lips, mirror covers, spoilers, side skirts and diffusers, the clear coat is what you are maintaining. Scratch that surface and the weave underneath may still be structurally fine, but the part will lose the crisp finish that makes carbon look right.

Matte or satin carbon needs even more care. Do not use gloss-enhancing waxes or dressings on it. They can leave patchy shiny spots that are difficult to reverse. Check the product finish before reaching for any detailing gear.

Carbon Fibre Care Guide: The Safe Wash Routine

Carbon components do not need exotic products. They need clean tools, sensible technique and regular attention. The biggest mistake is attacking dry dirt with a cloth. On a front splitter or rear diffuser, that grit acts like sandpaper.

Start by rinsing the panel with low to moderate water pressure. This lifts loose dust, mud and salt before you touch the surface. A pressure washer is fine when used carefully, but keep the nozzle well back and avoid firing directly at edges, joins, mounting points, exposed fasteners or clear coat chips. High pressure can force water into weak points and can lift an already compromised finish.

Wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo and a soft, clean microfibre wash mitt. Work from the cleaner upper sections down towards the lower aero parts. Front lips, skirts and diffusers should be left until last because they carry the worst contamination.

Rinse thoroughly, then dry with a plush microfibre towel or a vehicle dryer. Pat or gently glide the towel across the surface rather than grinding it into tight corners. If water sits around a spoiler base, diffuser fins or mounting hardware, use a soft drying towel to wick it away. Trapped moisture and grime around joins make the whole install look neglected.

For stubborn bug splatter, bird droppings or tar, soften the contamination first with a dedicated automotive-safe cleaner. Never scrape it off with a fingernail, a card or a rough sponge. Bird droppings are particularly aggressive in hot weather, so remove them as soon as practical rather than leaving them to bake onto a bonnet vent or spoiler.

What to Avoid on Carbon Parts

A carbon piece can handle normal detailing, but not every product belongs near it. Skip household cleaners, degreasers not intended for painted surfaces, harsh wheel acids, abrasive cutting compounds and stiff brushes. These can haze the clear coat, stain the resin or wear through the finish around sharp edges.

Be cautious with petrol, solvents and strong adhesive removers too. If a product is needed to remove tape residue from an install, test it in an unseen spot first and use the minimum amount required. Wipe it away promptly, then wash the area with pH-neutral shampoo.

Automatic car washes are another poor match for low and aggressive aero. Even if the brushes do not damage the carbon finish, they can catch a front lip, skirt extension or diffuser fin. Touchless washes reduce that physical contact, though harsh chemicals and high-pressure passes around edges are still not ideal.

Avoid leaning tools, shopping bags or loose gear against carbon panels in the garage. It sounds obvious, but mirror covers, boot spoilers and exposed diffusers often receive the small marks that show up most under direct sun.

Protect the Finish From Australian UV

Australia’s sun is hard on every exterior finish, particularly dark gloss panels that spend their days outdoors. UV exposure can dull the clear coat over time, while heat cycles can reveal flaws faster around edges and complex curves.

A quality paint sealant or wax that is safe for clear-coated surfaces adds a sacrificial layer and makes washing easier. Apply it lightly and evenly after a proper wash and dry. If the part has a matte or satin finish, use a protection product specifically made for matte paint or matte wrap. Standard wax can create uneven gloss.

Ceramic coating is a strong option for genuine gloss carbon fibre, especially on front lips, mirror covers and high-touch spoilers. It can improve water behaviour, reduce how strongly dirt sticks and add chemical resistance. It is not armour, though. A ceramic coating will not stop stone chips, gutter strikes or a badly placed driveway ramp from damaging a low splitter.

If the vehicle is parked outside most days, a car cover or shaded parking will do more for long-term finish preservation than constantly piling on products. Protection works best when it is part of the ownership routine, not a once-a-year rescue job.

Inspect the High-Risk Areas After Driving

The lowest and most exposed carbon parts deserve a quick inspection after spirited driving, long highway runs or rough road conditions. You are looking for fresh stone chips, cracking, movement, loose hardware and clear coat lifting around an edge.

On a front lip, check the underside as well as the visible face. Driveway approaches, speed humps and steep carpark ramps can contact the lip before you hear anything. On side skirts, inspect behind the front wheels where road grit is thrown back. Rear diffusers should be checked around exhaust tips, as excessive heat or soot can discolour nearby surfaces over time.

A small clear coat chip can often be addressed before moisture works its way into the resin. A crack in the carbon itself is different. If the weave is split, fibres are exposed, or a mounting point has fractured, stop treating it as a cosmetic issue. The part may need professional repair or replacement, particularly where fitment and retention affect safety.

Pay attention to panel movement as well. A spoiler or diffuser that suddenly vibrates, rattles or sits unevenly may have a loose fastener or failed mounting tape. Fix that early. A part that moves at speed can damage the vehicle’s paintwork, the component itself and potentially other road users.

Keep Carbon Looking Purposeful, Not Overdone

Carbon fibre works best when it looks intentional. That means clean weave, consistent finish and fitment that remains tight against the vehicle. It does not mean coating every surface in greasy tyre shine or chasing a mirror finish with aggressive polishing.

Fine wash marks can sometimes be corrected on gloss clear-coated carbon with a light finishing polish, but this is a job for restraint. Carbon parts often have thinner or less predictable clear coat than factory paint, especially around tight contours. If you are unsure how much correction the part can tolerate, have a reputable detailer assess it rather than risking a burnt edge or distorted finish.

For carbon-look plastic, skip heavy machine polishing altogether unless the manufacturer confirms it is suitable. The visual layer can be far less forgiving than genuine clear-coated carbon.

Care Starts With the Way You Drive

No cleaning product can undo repeated impacts. If your build runs a low front lip, approach steep driveways at an angle, slow down for speed humps and leave room from high kerbs when parking. That is not babying the car. It is protecting the details that give it presence.

Clean carbon regularly, protect it from UV, and inspect it before a minor mark becomes a costly replacement. Keep the weave crisp, the clear coat deep and the fitment tight, and every walk back to the car will still feel like the upgrade was worth it.
